Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne Photo gallery

This loop is demanding in sporting terms, but takes you to a haven of peace on the heights of the small village of Albanne, with a view of the majestic Croix des Têtes! It's ideal for cyclists in search of a challenge and Alpine authenticity.

Description

This confidential ascent really begins at the foot of the village of Le Bochet, where the road gradually rises and immediately sets a steady pace. The climb takes you as far as Montricher, a charming mountain village which you pass through in its entirety. As you leave it, a fork on the left leads you to Albanne: this is where the route becomes wilder. The narrow, little-traveled road twists and turns up to the Col d'Albanne, a discreet passage not marked by a sign, but clearly identifiable by a slight flat before a short descent to the hamlet of Albanne. At the entrance to the hamlet, a small road leads off to the right towards Lac de Pramol. This final, very steep kilometer is undoubtedly the most difficult part of the climb. The high gradients put the legs to the test, but the effort is amply rewarded at the finish.
The scenery at Lac de Pramol is spectacular. The view opens out onto the Encombres massif, dominated in the foreground by the majestic Croix des Têtes, a rocky mountain recognizable by its two summit mamelons. The site is peaceful and unspoilt, with benches and picnic tables ideal for a contemplative break after a hard day's work.
On the way back, you'll pass through the resort of Les Karellis before reaching Montricher and returning to Saint-Jean de Maurienne.
