Riding and dipping your feet - Summer 2025 ⛵ 3 lakes in the mountains

The Maurienne offers an exceptional setting for cycling enthusiasts with interesting rewards along the routes: the lakes. Whether for the pleasure of the eyes, to dip your feet along the way or for a refreshing swim after a long summer ride, the presence of a lake or a body of water is always pleasant in summer!

Here are three ideas for outings to enjoy our mountain lakes.

From Lake Hurtières towards the Col du Cucheron (Electric bike)

For a great e-bike adventure, start from Lac des Hurtières at the entrance to the Maurienne Valley and climb up to the Col du Cucheron. This route is ideal for those looking for a long but accessible outing, with gentle slopes and a significant difference in elevation to feel the altitude. Along the way, enjoy the alpine forests and the clear views of the surrounding peaks. A break at the summit allows you to admire the Lauzière massif.

The Col du Grand Cucheron (1188 m altitude) connects the Huiles Valley to the Maurienne Valley.

Col de la Croix de Fer and lake de Laitelet (road bike)

For fans of the big climbs, the Col de la Croix de Fer is a must-do climb. Start from Saint-Jean-de-Maurienne and follow the hairpin bends to this legendary and difficult pass. On the way, after the pleasant village of St Sorlin, stop at the Lac de Laitelet, a quiet place to recharge your batteries, take photos and enjoy a picturesque view (no swimming). Once at the top, you will be rewarded with impressive panoramas of the Alps and the famous Aiguilles d’Arves.

The Col de la Croix de Fer, culminating at 2064 m, is a true monument for cyclists. To measure yourself against this giant of the Alps, good physical condition is essential: 1500 to 1600 m of +elevation. Another option: leave from St Jean d’Arves or St Sorlin d’Arves to enjoy only the last and majestic climb!

Lake Mont Cenis on MTB

Mountain bike enthusiasts can treat themselves to an outing around the Mont Cenis Lake. The routes located on the Italian border will take you through high mountain landscapes and alpine meadows. The lake, with its bright blue waters, is a perfect setting for a well-deserved break before returning to the road.
