How to Experience the Tour de France in the Maurienne Valley – 2026 Edition 🚴‍♂️🇫🇷

Stage 20: Le Bourg d’Oisans → Alpe d’Huez
📏 171 km | ⛰️ Mountain Stage | 🗓️ Saturday, 25 July 2026

The Tour de France has rolled through the Maurienne Valley many times, and every visit has added a new legend and champion.

From epic duels on the Galibier to heroes crowned on the Croix de Fer, this valley has witnessed some of the most unforgettable moments in cycling history.

So, when the Tour returns in 2026, you’ll want to experience it the Maurienne way — surrounded by mountains, atmosphere, and pure passion.

Here are our 9 insider tips for making the most of your day with the Tour de France in the Maurienne.

1. Plan ahead and arrive early.

The Tour is a logistical masterpiece (and a bit of organized chaos). Roads close hours before the riders arrive, and the best spots fill up fast — sometimes days in advance. If you’re aiming for a mountain pass, plan to be there by morning and settle in for the show.

2. Get the official program or local paper

The Tour de France program, your local paper, or L’Équipe will have stage details, passing times, and maps — plus, they make excellent souvenirs.

3. Put your phone away

Seriously. You’ll miss the rush of the peloton, the noise, and the madness if you’re watching through a screen. Be present — live the moment. (And avoid becoming the person who accidentally steps into the riders’ path.)

4. The Feed Zone: where the magic happens

Want to catch a flying water bottle or a discarded musette? The Feed Zone is where the action slows down (a little) and souvenirs fly.

5. Summit views, summit vibes

If you can make it to the top — do it. Riders arrive in small groups, the air buzzes with cowbells and cheers, and the broom wagon brings up the rear. The mountains are the Tour.

6. Find a switchback

The Maurienne’s hairpin turns are legendary. Here, you can stand just metres from the riders — close enough to see the pain, the power, and the pure determination on their faces.

7. Pack like a pro

Backpack essentials: water, sunscreen, a Beaufort cheese sandwich (mandatory 🧀), and maybe a pair of sandals if you’re cycling to your spot. The Tour is a marathon for spectators too.

8. Be smart and safe

Don’t wander onto the road, don’t lean your bike where it can fall into the peloton, and use a small lock if you leave it unattended. A little awareness goes a long way. Please respect the riders and maintain a safe distance.
