The Haute Maurienne is a Mecca for rock art. This moderately difficult hike will take you to the Arcelle and Plan Cardinal engraved stones where many cupules and extremely interesting human representations are to be seen.
Nearly a thousand engraved stones have been identified in Maurienne. Stones with cupules, small bored cavities whose significance is unknown appear as early as the Neolithic, but it was in the Iron Age that rock art flourished. This is evidenced by the Parc des Lozes site in Aussois, where you can discover ibex hunting scenes, anthropomorphic representations, some of which are reminiscent of those of Val Camonica in Italy, another exceptional site for engravings in the Alps.
